As a non-profit organization, you’re doing all you can to make improvements in your community. Your non-profit website should be doing all it can to help you raise funds and achieve your goals. You can achieve your mission, and we want to help!
Understanding Our Client
BC & Alberta Guide Dogs‘ mission is to meet the growing demand for professionally trained Guide Dogs, Autism Service Dogs, and OSI-PTSD Service Dogs for citizens of British Columbia and Alberta. This not-for-profit organization endeavours to change the lives of individuals who are blind or visually impaired, children with Autism, and Veterans and First Responders with Operational Stress Injuries like PTSD. It takes two years and upwards of $35,000 to produce one certified dog, provided free of charge to the recipient. For these reasons, they rely heavily on our generous and loyal donors.
This is a cause we wanted to be a part of and knew we could help with, so we donated a portion of the production of this website at no cost to the client.
Competition & Keyword Research
We think about competition a little differently when considering non-profit strategy. Some donors hold these causes close to their hearts; other donors want to give back, but they are not sure which cause they should donate to. We need to consider both related competitors (such as other guide dog associations) and generic competitors (such as other non-profits). Our job as developers is to create fast, semantically correct websites to help donors of all kinds locate this cause. We ensure that advanced schema is used appropriately to improve website indexability. Our keyword research ensures all important pages are indexed, as well as blog content, which targets longer-tail keywords.
Updated Navigation
Guide dog websites tend to have very different navigational structures. Like snowflakes, no two are the same. We took a step back and looked at how other non-profits create lean, easy-to-navigate structures before outlining our navigation. The nomenclature was refined over several iterations until we created a user- and search-friendly navigation.
Accessible Website Design
Accessibility is ALWAYS important. It is of the utmost importance on a non-profit website. The internet is for everyone, and your website should be easy to use for everyone, including those accessing the website with accessibility tools such as a screen reader. This website was created to help visually impaired users get access to the information that they need quickly.
Improved Non-Profit Website Design
Not all websites are created equal. User and design research yielded short user stories, aimed at guiding users from discovery to donor in only a few clicks!
Every page you access is a donation page! The donation button is sticky and follows users through their journey in a non-intrusive way. The website’s content is structured to provide users with everything they need to know about the various programs in a few quick clicks. Calls to action have been added throughout the website for multiple initiatives. This non-profit website provides a conversion point whenever the user is ready to help.
Conversion Points
BC & Alberta Guide Dogs has several ways to give. For example, you can Donate Now, Sponsor a Puppy, or Donate through your business. or Leave a Legacy. Each of these pages feature unique conversion points designed to provide users with the correct conversion for their requirements. These systems also make it much more cost-effective for the organization to accept donations.
There are also conversion points for applicants seeking a dog. At the time of launch, the only program accepting applications is the OSI-PTSD Service Dog program. This page is laid out to provide applicants with critical information at the very top of the page, while the rest of the page explains the program and application process.
